Foreign Bank Focus: Geopolitics

5pm – 8pm, 18th November 2026
HSF Kramer, Exchange House, 12 Primrose Street, London, EC2A 2EG

We continue our series with the Association of Foreign Banks at this roundtable exploring the challenges of keeping up with geopolitics and providing effective board oversight of geopolitical risk.

This twice-yearly forum, hosted by HSF Kramer, is specifically for NEDs and Chairs of international banks and is open to relevant members of both the AFB and NEDs in FS.

Hosted by Marina Reason and Susannah Cogman, partners at HSF Kramer, we will also be joined by geopolitical adviser Derek Leatherdale, former Head of Geopolitical Risk at HSBC.

We’ll look at how boards can turn a broad and fast-moving topic into practical questions about their firms’ exposure, priorities and controls, including:

  • How can firms identify the geopolitical threats that matter most to their business and customers?
  • What makes responding to geopolitical events difficult, and how can boards challenge their firms’ preparedness?
  • How can geopolitical risk be measured, compared with other risks and reflected in budgets and decisions?
  • How are regulatory expectations evolving, including APRA’s minimum expectations for geopolitical risk readiness and lessons from the ECB’s geopolitical risk reverse stress test?
  • What assurance should NEDs seek that anti-money laundering and sanctions risks are being managed effectively?
  • What questions should NEDs be asking in the boardroom?

There will be plenty of opportunity to share experiences under the Chatham House Rule, compare notes with peers and bring questions from your own board’s agenda. As ever, we will continue the conversation over a glass of wine.
